3Cr13 steel is a Chinese GB/T standard martensitic stainless steel and one of the most widely produced stainless grades. Its Western equivalent is AISI 420, offering a balance of hardness, toughness, and corrosion resistance between 304, 316, and 440C stainless steels.
This guide explains its composition and GB designation, mechanical properties, and heat-treatment processes. The article also compares 3Cr13 with 420 and 440C stainless steels, covers CNC machining parameters, and outlines its applications.
What Is 3Cr13 Steel?
3Cr13 steel is a type of stainless steel commonly used to make knives, scissors, and other tools. It is classified as a martensitic steel, which is characterized by high hardness and wear resistance. The prefix “3” represents ten times the carbon percentage, so 3 equals approximately 0.3% carbon. “Cr13,” on the other hand, indicates 13% chromium as the primary alloying element.
The full composition of 3Cr13 consists mainly of carbon and chromium, with controlled levels of manganese, silicon, phosphorus, and sulfur within standard limits. Here’s a table showing the percentages comprising each of these elements:
| عنصر | Content (%) | یادداشتها |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | 0.26 – 0.35 | Primary contributor to hardness and strength after heat treatment |
| کروم (Cr) | 12 – 14 | Provides corrosion resistance and forms a passive oxide layer |
| منگنز (Mn) | ≤ 1.0 | Improves hardenability and deoxidation during steelmaking |
| سیلیکون (Si) | ≤ 1.0 | Enhances strength and supports deoxidation |
| Phosphorus (P) | ≤ 0.04 | Impurity controlled for toughness and ductility |
| Sulfur (S) | ≤ 0.03 | Impurity controlled, but excessive levels reduce toughness and machinability |

After undergoing quenching and tempering, 3Cr13 steel achieves a tensile strength of over 735 MPa, a conditional yield strength of at least 540 MPa, and a hardness that typically reaches the upper range of HRC 48–53. These properties indicate that steel can withstand high mechanical loads and wear.
Due to its relatively low chromium content and high carbon content, 3Cr13 steel is more corrosion-resistant than carbon steel but less corrosion-resistant than austenitic stainless steels, such as 304. It can still rust in humid environments, so it is not suitable for use in highly corrosive media or low-temperature environments.
How 3Cr13 Compares to Other Stainless Steels
3Cr13 presents some similarities in composition and properties with other steel grades. However, the truth is that each grade has its unique properties, which make them differ as follows:
| نمره | Hardness (HRC) | مقاومت در برابر خوردگی | Toughness | Cost vs 3Cr13 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3Cr13 | 50–55 | متعادل | خوب | Reference |
| 3Cr13MoV | 52–56 | Moderate to good | خوب | 10–15% higher |

| 8Cr13MoV | 57–59 | Moderate to good | متعادل | 30–50% higher |
| 5Cr15MoV | 55–58 | خوب | خوب | 30–40% higher |
| AISI 440 (440A) | 55–57 | خوب | متعادل | 1.5–2× higher |
| D2 tool steel | 58–64 | پایین | Low and brittle | 1.5–2× higher |
| 316 stainless | HRB 79 and not hardenable | عالی | عالی | 1.5–2× higher |
When to Choose 3Cr13 Stainless Steel
- میلها, pins, and mechanical parts that experience moderate friction or wear;
- Knives, blades, and cutting components for general use;
- Brackets, ابزار اتصال, and hardware that are exposed to moisture, but not to severe chemicals or saltwater.
- Small tooling components that require better hardness than 304 but not the very high wear resistance of D2 or 440C.
- Parts that are subject to occasional impact or lateral loads where grades with higher hardness may be too brittle.
Considerations for CNC Machining 3Cr13 Steel Parts
آن correct machining sequence for 3Cr13 is to machine first in the annealed condition, then harden. Annealed 3Cr13 steel is much easier to machine, making it ideal for گردش, فرزکاری, حفاری, and threading before hardening. However, once hardened, the material becomes much more difficult to cut and may require grinding or other hard-machining processes for critical features.
Another key consideration is heat control. At 12.4–17.0 W/m·K, 3Cr13’s thermal conductivity is roughly one-third that of carbon steel. As a result, less heat escapes through chips, so cutting temperatures run 200–300°C higher than when machining 45 steel. Without continuous مایع خنککننده, heat builds up at the tool tip, which accelerates wear and can alter the microstructure near the surface.
For parts that require heat treatment, perform all critical machining operations before hardening, if possible. Features such as bores, threads, and tight-tolerance surfaces are easier to produce accurately when the material is softer. Then, a small amount of finishing stock can be left for post-heat treatment آسیابیدن when the final hardness or dimensional accuracy requires it.
Applications of 3Cr13 Steel
- Cutlery and kitchen knives: This is the largest single application for 3Cr13 globally. The 3Cr13 steel made kitchen knives at HRC 52–55 hold adequate sharpness for domestic use and resharpen easily.
- Industrial and utility ابزارهای برش: 3Cr13 typically runs at HRC 48–52 to maximize toughness and reduce chipping risk at impact angles. Because of that, it is the most preferred material to make scissors, shears, utility knives, and box cutters.
- قطعات خودرو: 3Cr13 is used on CNC-machined mechanical parts requiring moderate hardness and some corrosion resistance. Such parts include pump shafts, valve stems, gear shafts, and pivot pins in non-aggressive environments.
- Mold components and tooling inserts: 3Cr13 is hardened to HRC 48–52 and finished by grinding to make a cost-effective alternative to higher-alloy tool steels for lower-volume mold applications.
- Consumer hardware and general industrial parts: 3Cr13 is often used in the annealed condition to make springs, fasteners, hinges, and structural components in consumer products that require moderate corrosion resistance more than maximum hardness.

3Cr13 stainless steel is a practical choice for قطعات ماشینکاریشده با سیانسی that need a combination of moderate hardness, good toughness, and corrosion resistance. It works particularly well for shafts, pins, blades, hardware, and other general-purpose components where extreme wear resistance or corrosion resistance is not required.
However, machining 3Cr13 steel requires understanding the anneal-machine-harden sequence and the corrosion environment the finished part will operate in. For instance, parts requiring higher hardness or better corrosion resistance, 3Cr13MoV, 4Cr13, or 440C would be better 3Cr13 steel alternatives.
