Was ist 6061-T6-Aluminium?
Was bedeutet die Härtebezeichnung „T6“?

Aluminum 6061-T6 vs T651: How to Choose
Both T6 and T651 are the same alloy with the same chemistry and almost identical mechanical properties. The difference is residual stress, which determines whether parts remain dimensionally stable after CNC-Bearbeitung or warp.
For instance, T651 plate stock is mechanically stretched approximately 1 to 3% after quenching and before artificial aging. This stretching plastically deforms the material just enough to equalize the residual stresses introduced by the quench. As a result, the T651 plate retains nearly the same UTS and yield strength as T6 (within 5%), but the residual stress levels reduce by 60 to 80%.
On the other hand, for rod, bar, and extruded stock, the residual stress in T6 is typically balanced enough that distortion during machining is not a practical problem. Because of this, T6 is the standard and lower-cost specification for these forms. However, for plate stock used to machine flat parts, precision frames, large panels, and other parts where flatness after machining is a critical requirement, T651 is the right option.
- You are machining rods, bars, or extrusions.
- The part is relatively small or distortion is not a major concern.
- You need a standard, cost-effective 6061 temper.
- You are machining from 6061 plate stock.
- The part is large, thin, or has extensive material removed during machining.
- Ebenheit and dimensional stability after CNC Bearbeitung sind entscheidend.
- You are machining precision frames, large panels, base plates, or other flat components.
CNC Machining 6061-T6: Is It Easy to Machine?
6061-T6 is one of the most CNC-machinable metals in regular production. However, “easy to machine” does not mean “difficult to get wrong.” The main challenges we see in production are built-up edge (BUE), long stringy chips, burr formation, and Oberflächengüte degradation when the Werkzeuge and cutting conditions are not properly matched to the material.
Based on our experience with machining, the following factors have the greatest impact on the performance of machining 6061-T6.
- Schnittgeschwindigkeit: The practical cutting speed while using carbide end mills is 600 to 1,200 SFPM, depending on the tool diameter, flute geometry, machine rigidity, and cutting conditions. At an appropriate cutting speed, the 6061-T6 shears cleanly, chips evacuate efficiently, and surface finish improves.
- Tooling geometry: Sharp tooling is particularly important when machining 6061-T6. 6061-T6 requires high positive rake angles of 10 to 15 degrees and sharp, polished cutting edges. The high positive rake angles reduce cutting force and minimize the friction that causes BUE.
- Chip-Kontrolle: The 6061-T6 aluminum alloy can produce long, stringy chips, especially when machining pockets, deep cavities, or features with high material removal. A directed air blast helps evacuate chips that would otherwise wrap around the workpiece or re-enter the cut. Similarly, coolant improves chip evacuation and prevents re-cutting, which degrades the finish and accelerates wear.
- Surface finish achievable: With the proper tooling and finishing parameters, an average roughness (Ra) value of 0.8–1.6 μm can be achieved for many standard CNC-machined 6061-T6 surfaces. Using sharp tooling, high-speed finishing, light cuts, and stable machine conditions may also allow for a Ra value of around 0.4 μm.
Applications of 6061-T6 Aluminum
- Gut CNC Bearbeitbarkeit for prototypes and production parts
- Mäßige Stärke without the weight of steel
- Gute Korrosionsbeständigkeit for general industrial use
- Eloxieren and other finishing options
- Reliable material availability
- A material that is suitable for both simple and complex machined geometries
- Luft- und Raumfahrt und Verteidigung: 6061-T6 is used for various non-critical structural and support components, such as equipment mounting brackets, access panels, avionics enclosures, instrument mounts, and antenna supports. Its low density and machinability make it useful in applications where weight reduction and dimensional accuracy are important.
- Automobil und Motorsport: CNC-machined 6061-T6 is commonly used for mounting brackets, suspension components, engine and transmission housings, spacers, and other lightweight structural parts. It offers a useful balance between strength, weight, machinability, and corrosion resistance.
- Medizinische Geräte: 6061-T6 aluminum is used in equipment housings, instrument frames, mounting components, and laboratory equipment. Its corrosion resistance, machinability, and anodizing compatibility make it ideal for many non-implantable medical and laboratory applications.
- Consumer Electronics: Due to its thermal conductivity of approximately 167 W/m·K, 6061-T6 is often used to make heat sinks, cold plates, electronic enclosures, LED housings, and other thermal management components. Its thermal performance, combined with its relatively low density, makes it useful for lightweight electronic hardware.
- Robotik und Automatisierung: Robotic arm links, joint housings, end-effector brackets, and linear axis carriages use 6061-T6 because of its high stiffness-to-weight ratio, which keeps arm inertia low while maintaining structural rigidity.
