CNC Grinding Explained: Process, Types & Common Issues

Table of Contents

CNC grinding is one of the most precise and efficient finishing processes in modern manufacturing. Computer-controlled grinding machines are used to precisely remove unwanted material, resulting in ultra-smooth surfaces that meet strict tolerances.
This article provides an in-depth explanation of CNC grinding technology, including detailed processes, types of CNC grinding and solutions to common issues.

What Is CNC Grinding?

CNC grinding is a process in which a computer-controlled grinding wheel removes small amounts of material from a part. In this way, the part will get a very smooth and accurate finish.
Unlike milling or turning, CNC grinding doesn’t cut with blades. Instead, it wears the material away with abrasive particles on the wheel’s surface. Therefore, it is used for hard materials like stainless steel, titanium, or ceramics, which can easily dull or damage regular cutting tools.

Types of CNC Grind Machining

Surface Grinding

This method is to grind the surface with a rotating wheel to remove material and achieve a smooth, flat surface. Surface grinding is commonly used for machining parts with high requirements for flatness and surface roughness, such as machine tool ways and flat plates.

Cylindrical Grinding

This process is grinding the outer cylindrical surfaces of cylindrical or rod-shaped workpieces to achieve precise diameter control and surface finish. It is suitable for machining shafts and rod-type components.

Centerless Grinding

The workpiece is not positioned using centers or chucks but instead relies on the relative motion between the grinding wheel and the guide wheel for grinding. This method is suitable for high-volume production of cylindrical parts, characterized by high efficiency and automation.

Internal Grinding

Internal grinding is used to process the inner bore or cavity surfaces of workpieces by extending the grinding wheel into the hole. It enables high-precision machining of internal bores and is commonly used for the internal bore processing of parts such as bearings and cylinders.

Creep Feed Grinding (Slow Feed Grinding)

This process removes substantial material at low feed rates, suitable for machining difficult-to-cut materials or complex-shaped parts. It enhances material removal rates while maintaining machining accuracy.

Profile Grinding

Using specially dressed grinding wheels or form tools, this process shapes workpiece surfaces to create complex geometries such as gear tooth profiles and curved contours.

Precision Grinding and Ultra-Precision Grinding

Employing high-precision CNC grinding machines and specialized grinding techniques, this method achieves extremely high machining accuracy and surface quality. It is essential for components requiring high precision, such as optical elements and precision bearings.

How CNC Grinding Works (Step-by-Step Process)

This section provides a detailed, step-by-step guide to the entire CNC grinding process, from start to finish.

1. Process Preparation

Firstly, the machining plan should be established according to the part drawings and technical specifications. A CNC grinding machine with the appropriate level of precision, power and number of spindles is selected as well. Suitable fixtures and grinding wheels should also be determined at this stage.

2. Workpiece Clamping

  • Place the workpiece in the fixture. Use the fixture’s locating elements (such as centres, chucks and locating pins) to establish the machining reference position of the workpiece and ensure it remains stable during the grinding process.
  • Secure the workpiece firmly by adjusting the clamping force of the fixture, while avoiding deformation caused by excessive force.

3. Grinding Wheel Selection and Dressing

  • Select grinding wheels according to the material and machining requirements. For instance, aluminum oxide wheels are suitable for steel, while diamond wheels are better suited for handling hard ceramics or carbides.
  • Maintain a sharp and regular surface shape on the grinding wheel by using diamond dressers or other dressing tools. This will ensure grinding accuracy and surface quality.

4. Grinding Machining

  • Set the grinding parameters according to the workpiece material, the characteristics of the grinding wheel and the machining requirements. These include grinding wheel speed, workpiece speed, grinding depth and feed rate. The optimal combination of parameters is typically determined through trial and error and experience.
  • Start the grinding machine, and the grinding wheel will come into contact with the workpiece surface. Material is progressively removed through the cutting action of the abrasive grains on the grinding wheel, gradually achieving the required dimensional and shape accuracy.

5. Automated Measurement and Feedback Systems

During the grinding process, the dimensional and geometric accuracy of the workpiece is periodically measured using tools such as micrometers, callipers and roundness gauges, in order to monitor the quality of the machining process.
These systems detect even the tiniest variations in shape or surface finish and send feedback to the control software. The machine can then make minor adjustments automatically to stay within the desired tolerance.

Common CNC Grinding Issues and Solutions

Several common issues arise when using CNC grinding machines for CNC grinding operations. These include an insufficient surface finish, dimensional inaccuracies in workpieces and surface burn marks or cracks.

Surface Scratches on Workpieces

This issue primarily occurs when grinding wheels operating at high speeds interact with the workpiece surface. This causes abrasive particles to break off and become lodged in the machined surface or mix into the grinding fluid, resulting in scratches.
Solutions:
  • Preventing abrasive particles from contaminating the grinding fluid involves adjusting the position, flow rate and spray pressure of the grinding fluid nozzle to keep the fluid on the grinding wheel and workpiece clean.
  • Set grinding parameters properly to ensure that the plastic deformation of the workpiece remains within acceptable limits during processing.
  • Additionally, perform adequate wheel dressing to sharpen dull wheels, thereby improving grinding efficiency and surface finish.

Workpiece Grinding Accuracy Deviation

Workpiece deviations primarily stem from geometric (motion deviations) and thermal deviations. Continuous movement and motion of components cause spatial positions to deviate from reference values, thereby generating errors.
Thermal errors arise from thermal deformation occurring in the grinding machine during processing, leading to deviations in the equipment’s positional accuracy and straightness.
Solutions:
  • To ensure precision in the grinding machine’s motion trajectory and reduce spatial errors caused by movement, control command algorithms can be employed.
  • Thermal errors can be controlled through thermal compensation (i.e., monitoring and correcting machine temperature via equipment), using higher-strength materials to minimize thermal deformation, installing cooling devices, or replacing materials with lower thermal expansion coefficients.

Grinding Burn and Cracks

The reason for this issue is the generation of instantaneous high temperatures within the grinding zone. Once these temperatures reach the phase transition range, surface changes, reducing the metal’s strength and hardness. Additionally, the use of coolant for heat dissipation in CNC grinding machines may cause cracks.
Solutions:
  • Select appropriate grinding parameters and make necessary adjustments. If burn occurs with low cutting parameters, increase the longitudinal feed rate; conversely, reduce feed and increase grinding frequency.
  • For grinding fluid selection, choose oil-based products and employ wet grinding methods. Ensure fluid supply and high pressure to enhance cooling and chip evacuation. When selecting coolant, choose a pure coolant with appropriate viscosity and maintain it at a low temperature to achieve optimal cooling effects.

FAQ

What’s the difference between CNC grinding and CNC milling?
CNC milling utilizes rotating cutting tools to shape metal, whereas CNC grinding employs abrasive wheels to smooth or refine surfaces. Milling is excellent for shaping, but grinding takes accuracy further.
CNC grinding can achieve extremely high levels of precision, typically ±0.005 mm to ±0.001 mm (5 to 1 micron) in dimensional accuracy, depending on the material, machine condition, and grinding wheel quality.
With optimized parameters and proper wheel dressing, CNC grinding can achieve a surface roughness (Ra) as low as 0.05 μm.
CNC grinding can handle a wide range of materials, especially those that are hard, wear-resistant, or require tight dimensional tolerances. With diamond or CBN (Cubic Boron Nitride) wheels, machinists can grind hard alloys such as titanium, carbide, and Inconel without damaging the workpiece.
You need to match the wheel type to your material and finish needs. Aluminum oxide wheels work best for steel. For hard metals, use CBN or diamond wheels. The grit size also matters. Coarse grits remove material fast, while fine grits give a smooth, mirror-like finish.
