Technological and Production Complexity
- Tight tolerances: Many automotive components have to have extremely tight tolerances, in particular those used in either the engine, transmission, or braking systems of an automobile. Small dimensional variations could lead to serious system failures.
- Complex designs: Most of the modern automotive components have intricate geometries that are difficult and require multi-axis CNCs and expert programming to produce efficiently. Deburring or chamfering the intricate features on small components is extremely challenging.
- Material Instability: Thin-walled or complex parts are prone to material deformation, warping, or cracking during machining. High speeds during cutting promote this with high heat and force.
- Diverse Materials: The automotive industry covers several materials, ranging from lightweight aluminum and composites for improved efficiency to high-strength steels and even exotic alloys for critical applications.
